Linking and connecting as well different functions and landscapes, the intervention is trying to achieve an osmosis between landscape and architecture. Interpreting the existing typology of very little hamlets, villages along the coast, three volumes, in dense dynamic relation with the Causeway Hotel, the Old school museum and the Nook public house contribute to respect the traditional typology. The disposal of the volumes has been generated by the functionality and the operational efficiency of the facilities. The open character of the disposal from the new facilities offers at each moment a rich architectural and sensitive experience linking the coast and the hinterland together. Approaching the site from the land, the fan-shaped architecture and landscape embraces the visitor. From the coast the visual impact is very minimized in order to give absolute priority to the landscape. The very open character through the volumes offers a permeability that is absolutely necessary. One building offers a panoramic view from its roof that is accessed very easily. From this point the visitor is immerged in beauty, wildness and peace. 02 Architectural stones, tectonic movement The architecture is in symbiosis with the context. Polygonal shaped volumes enter into dialogue with the existing geology. Seen from the coast the buildings look like stones or carapaces. Like tectonic movements the buildings seem to be a continuation of the bedrock. Large basalt stones, very roughly treated, and large glass panels provide an interesting play between plain and void. This provides through each season a very interesting and long term durable ensemble based on traditional materials in a contemporary interpretation. During the night some squared and colored ‘eyes’ contribute to a delicious experience. This contributes to a changing picture of the Giant’s Causeway. 03 Landscaping strategy Priority to landscape, has been our ‘Leitmotiv’ in projecting. The green grass carpet, brushed by the wind is a beautiful very simple landscape picture that needs to be preserved as much as possible. Like a big patchwork, fields are connected to one another. Our intervention erases hard existing surfaces and replaces them by simple grass fields, more or less stabilized in order to be able to accept vehicle circulation. The pastures are one of the main images kept in mind after a visit in Ireland. Our project is melting picnic and play areas into the pastures in respecting the local landscape. Artificial interventions are avoided.
